So this past week sculpture we were given our first prompt. Which was to create 10’ tall column out of objects that are a maximum of 6” in length. This column also must be photographed in 2 different places on campus, these 2 places must let the column touch the bottom and the top to something.
After some thought I decided that I want to work with wood. I don’t just want to work in only wood but would like to juxtapose it with sheet metal or a very shiny metal. To give intertwine the natural aspects of a column and the industrial materials that a column is made out of.
As of now I want to take logs starting as 6”x6” and then I am having the width get smaller. Then larger again so the smallest pieces will be in the middle. The tower will almost be in the shape of an hour glass. I think this would be the most visually appealing Colum that I could make. The hardest thing will be making the bases as I do not know how I want to go about doing this because the bases need to be larger than the column itself so it will represent a column.
