Photography
Project 1- Diptych
Main Goals
- Be able to effectively critique photographs
- Completely understand the concepts
- Develop compositional awareness
The project was to take 2 photographs that complement each other and place them together. The photographs are taken of multiple and individual leaves, I have used different techniques to obtain the current layout. On the left I took one long exposure and moved a couple of the leaves while leaving a couple stationary. This brought out the highlghts of the leaves while keeping the high contrast. On the right photo I pulled the leaf apart and took a stationary photograph. The photographs are very different but the title Fire and Ice brings them both together. I wanted the viewer to respond positively to the position of the photos, which is why I mirrored them to each other. (individual photo size 7.5x4.5, size with matt board 13x11)
Project 2- Pinhole Cameras
Marie Westerblom is one pinhole photographer I enjoy. Her photography consist mostly of nature, which is also what I am interested in photographing. Her photos usally have little to no objects outside of nature. Her focus is the object in nature and how it reacts to nature.
This project brings us back to the beginning of photography. A pinhole camera is an enclosed space (for example a Pringles can) with a small hole poked on one side. On the opposite side is photographic paper, you then choose how long to leave the shutter open. I had a lot of trouble in the beginning trying to get the correct exposure accurate. After I figured out what the correct exposure should be I started to focus more on the compositional aspects. The left image is a contact print of the right image. Dorothea Lange is a very innovative photographer for her time; She was born May 26, 1895 and immigrated to Hoboken New Jersey and photographed during the great depression. Lange attended Columbia University in New York; in 1918 She moved to San Francisco and opened up a successful portrait studio. Once the Depression hit she turned her energy from San Francesco to the Great Depression.
Lange did not take a bland view for when photographing the great depression. She wanted to take a new innovative approach to the norm of photography at that time. Lange decided to photograph people and objects as they were, while putting no outside pressure on how she wanted them to look. At this time people took portraits the photographers always had people smile and look very happy. Lange wanted to capture the true emotion of the composition.
This photo is one of Langes most famous work called “Migrant Mother” It
Brings the poor and forgotten up into the limelight of society. Gray scale really brings out the dirty and povershed look in the woman’s face. The photo is very balanced within the frame, which brings up the emphasis of poverty. The expression Lange captures is breathtaking and one of a kind..
Lange’s photos really connect with how our class portrays our own photography. We have only photographed in black and white and stress visual texture as we can see from all of Lange’s photos. We can see that the artistic ideas of movement, unity, cohesion and proximity are used within her works and within our own.

This pice it titled WTF which means What The Focus. I used this title since the project was to show control over your camera. Depth of field is the main concept that needed to be portrayed within this project. Focusing is one of the most important things when you are shooting for depth of field. The left image is blurry in the foreground of the wall, while the trees and background are in focus. The image on the left image shows the wall in focus while the trees are out of focus. “Great photographers is that they suggest more than just what they show literally,” Robert Adams said. Robert was born in New Jersey and was taught at a young age to hammer nails and work with wood. Adams really believes that that helps your soul and keeps you true to your self. He loves hiking in the mountains and being surrounded by nature, his father was the person who exposed him to many of the ideas the he focuses on today. Adams focuses on westward expansion and human interactions with nature, his first series in taken all in Colorado in gray scale.
Adams first began to take pictures of Colorado and show the civilian life entering the wilderness. When Adams first developed his serious he shot in Colorado he thought he was photographing things he hated but they were discourteously gloriously. Adams loves the high altitude light that Colorado receives. Adams really focuses on light placement and how the light affects the subject, He wants all of his pictures have a much deeper idea and meaning.
This photo is one Adams took of the city of Boulder in Colorado. The composition is very strong with the black trees in the foreground boulder in the bowl and the planes behind the city. The range of value is very propionate we can see a full paled of color. This is a successful picture in Adams mind because of the contradictionary nature of the western experience.

For this project we were to take 5 images that communicate a concept that is important to you. I choose whitewater kayaking, the images are of essential pieces of gear whitewater kayakers use and need. I wanted to show hat you can be prepared for the worst and still be unprepared. You never know what mental and physical challenges the day will hold. We need to expect the unexpected and be ready for anything. The first 3 pictures is of all the gear laid out in an organizes way before we go paddling, next is the water which smbolizes the trip. Last is all the gear that was in the PFD and boat that is not seen. It is in a mess because of what happened during the trip and how it was used, we expected the worst and it happened but we were prepared for most of it.

David Hockney is a photo collages from Brittan. He was born in Bradford England in 1937, David was interested in art and books at a young age, Hockney attended Bradford college of art then moved to Los Angeles in the 60s where he painted his most famous swimming pool paintings (Hockney). Hockney took a few pictures of a living room in L.A. to paint from. After his painting was done he realized the collage he made was art in itself and it needed no painting. This became his claim to fame and Hockney then began working more extensively with photography.
Hockney was a promoter of film photography. “in 1989 I was invited by adobe in Silicon valley to the launch of Photoshop” (Youtube) David was at the forefront of the innovative side of photography. “well that was all about drawing and that was the end of chemical photography” (Youtube) he knew that chemical photography would come to an end and digital would take over. David thinks Photoshop makes all magazines look similar; the editors can take all the highlights and blemishes away.
In “Pearblossom highway” which is a collage comprised of eight hundred pictures. It was created to show the long ever-lasting road network of the south west. Not one photo is taken from the same perspective. The idea of different perspective really makes us feel like we are inside the same photo. Some thought it was a painting some thought it was a photograph. He chooses the blue he wanted and could change the exposure of each one to get the correct color, which resembles more of a painting than a photo.
With connecting this piece of art to our class we can reflect many of the same ideas. Hockney uses line as a visual aide in movement of your eye around the photograph. None of the images are composed of the same angle; David switches perspectives within each image. The variety of blues in the sky destroys the sense of unity we want to add to this image. The whole piece is very balanced he reflects and repeats the same shapes to create balance and unity.

As humans we never look twice at something that has no emotional value. We name the object and move on. Trees are one thing that we take for granted, we walk past them every day and never acknowledge them. The images are taken at dramatic angles to show all the detail and texture associated within the trees. The negative white space within the images shows us what miss from trees in our everyday life while promotes eye movement.
