This week I had the opportunity to really start to try my new ideas. I got to think about the metal that will be in the middle of the work and I got to try working with the logs. I also had the opportunity to use / purchase the metal pole that will go down the full length of the column.
This past Saturday I put a new chain on my chainsaw. This made a big difference in cutting. The cuts were all very straight and accurate. Below are some of the images of the cuts that I made. I made sure that the logs were under 6” in length. A lot of the bark on the logs has started to fall off, but I really like the decomposition and the evolution it is taking. It brings in the factor of time.
My next big problem is figuring out what to use in between the logs. I was thinking I could have used rolled steel and rivet them together. But I really dislike the seam that it creates. I would like to create a seamless piece of rolled steel. This is something that I will further have to develop.
Lastly I picked up a 12” drill bit extension, this is so I can drill holes through the middle of the logs. This was a much needed piece of equipment.
